A groundbreaking new study released this week has sent shockwaves through the weight loss community in South Africa, as researchers revealed that a combination of traditional African herbs and modern nutrition may hold the key to rapid and sustainable weight loss. The study, conducted by the University of Cape Town and published in the Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism on 20 July 2026, found that individuals who incorporated a specially formulated blend of locally sourced herbs into their diets experienced significant weight loss and improved overall health.
According to the study’s lead author, Dr. Nompumelelo Mthembu, the unique blend of herbs used in the study has been used for centuries in traditional African medicine to aid in digestion and weight management. “Our findings suggest that this blend, when combined with a balanced diet and regular exercise, may be a highly effective tool for promoting weight loss and improving overall health,” Dr. Mthembu said in a statement. The study involved over 100 participants, who were divided into two groups: one that received the herbal blend, and one that did not. Over the course of 12 weeks, the group receiving the herbal blend experienced an average weight loss of 10 kg, compared to just 2 kg in the control group.
While the study’s findings are promising, experts warn that more research is needed to fully understand the potential benefits and risks of using traditional African herbs for weight loss. “While this study is certainly intriguing, it’s essential to approach any new weight loss method with caution and to consult with a healthcare professional before making any significant changes to your diet or exercise routine,” said Dr. Samantha Smith, a leading nutrition expert at the University of Witwatersrand.
