A recent outbreak of cyclosporiasis, a parasitic intestinal infection caused by the Cyclospora cayetanensis parasite, has been reported in Singapore. The infection, which can cause symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and weight loss, has affected several individuals in the city-state. Health authorities are urging citizens to take precautions to prevent the spread of the infection.
According to the National Environment Agency (NEA) and the Ministry of Health (MOH), the source of the outbreak is still unknown, but investigations are underway to determine the cause. The NEA has issued a warning to food handlers and vendors to ensure that their food is handled and stored properly to prevent contamination. In addition, the MOH has advised citizens to practice good hygiene, including washing hands frequently and thoroughly, and cooking food at a high temperature to kill the parasite.
The MOH has also set up a hotline for citizens to report any symptoms or concerns related to cyclosporiasis. Citizens are advised to seek medical attention immediately if they experience any symptoms of the infection. The Singapore government is taking a proactive approach to contain the outbreak and prevent further spread of the infection.
