India’s financial sector has been left reeling after a spate of Visa skimming cases has come to light in recent weeks. According to reports, several instances of credit and debit card information being stolen using compromised point-of-sale (PoS) terminals have been reported across the country.
The cases are believed to have originated from a combination of insider threats and malware attacks on the PoS systems of various merchants. Experts warn that the use of advanced malware has made it increasingly difficult for banks and merchants to detect such skimming activities. “The rise of sophisticated malware has made it challenging for financial institutions to identify and prevent skimming attacks,” said a cybersecurity expert. “It’s a cat-and-mouse game between the attackers and the defenders, and the attackers are getting more sophisticated by the day.”
As the Indian government cracks down on these incidents, financial institutions are being forced to re-examine their security protocols. “We are working closely with the relevant authorities to ensure that our systems are secure and that our customers’ information is protected,” said a spokesperson for a leading Indian bank. The cases have raised concerns about the security of financial transactions in India, highlighting the need for greater vigilance and cooperation between banks, merchants, and regulatory bodies.
