According to reports, the proposed regulations will require pit bull owners to obtain liability insurance, undergo background checks, and register their dogs with local authorities. Additionally, owners will be required to keep their pit bulls muzzled and on a leash in public areas. The regulations will also mandate that pit bulls be spayed or neutered to prevent unwanted breeding.
The South African National Council of Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) has welcomed the move, stating that it is a step in the right direction towards reducing the risks associated with pit bull ownership. However, some owners have expressed concerns that the regulations will unfairly target responsible owners and do not address the root causes of dog attacks.
