As part of its ongoing efforts to reduce waste and promote sustainability, the Singaporean government has introduced a new beverage container return scheme. The initiative, aimed at encouraging consumers to recycle more, will see a network of return points set up across the city-state, where residents can bring in used drink containers and receive rewards in exchange.
Under the scheme, participating beverage manufacturers will be required to fund the establishment of return points, which will be located in various retail outlets, supermarkets, and community centers. Consumers can then deposit their used containers at these points and receive a refund in the form of cash, vouchers, or even loyalty rewards. This scheme is expected to significantly boost recycling rates in Singapore, with estimates suggesting that up to 90% of eligible containers could be returned.
The Singaporean government has welcomed the beverage industry’s support for the scheme, with Environment and Water Resources Minister, Maliki Osman, stating that the initiative will “foster a culture of sustainability” among residents. By incentivizing consumers to recycle more, Singapore aims to reduce its reliance on landfills and minimize the environmental impact of waste disposal.
